The Mentalist strikes a pretty good balance: Marin watches it for the protagonist, played by Simon Baker, and I watch it for his boss, played by Robin Tunney. (Amanda Righetti doesn’t hurt, either.)

I generally like the show, though I’m not 100% on it yet. I think there’s a bit too much “I’m right and you dumb cops are wrong” when there should be more teamwork and give-and-take. Still, the skeptic in me is generally pleased with how that aspect is handled, for the most part.
I guess I don’t mind the “lone wolf loosely tied to a team” dynamic; ensemble investigation shows are rather commonplace these days.
The scene where Jane (the protagonist) played rock-paper-scissors against the sheriff, beat the sheriff on multiple rounds, and then grinned slyly… that’s the kind of thing I like about the show, all joking* about the ladies aside.
(*and by that I mean “not joking”)
